Glenn (“Haul em-in”) Hampel

Glenn Edward Hampel, age 90, of Mayville, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2010 at Fisher Senior Care and Rehab Center in Mayville. He was born on July 1, 1919 on the family farm in Fremont Township to the late John and Ida Anita (Johnson) Hampel.

Glenn lived first in Fremont Township and attended the Four Towns Country School. Since 1950 he has resided in Dayton Township. He married the former Pearl Grace Harbin on September 15, 1938 in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him in death on December 6, 2005. Upon leaving country school, he went to work as an electrician with Truck and Coach in Pontiac. He left that job to work the family farm for his widowed mother. For most of his working life, however, Glenn was a well known self-employed carpenter, but his true passions were fishing, hunting, Michigan State University and having coffee and doughnuts with his buddies at the barber shop. He was an honorary member of the local MSU alumnus organization and in his early life he was involved in 4H with his wife, Pearl. “Haul em-in” Hampel was a local celebrity on WKYO with 22 years of sport shows and reports from the Cat Lake Weather Station.

He is survived by four children, Larry (Thirene) Hampel of Caro, Rosalie (Floyd) Milton of Marlette, Gary (Diane) Hampel of Riverview, Florida and Nancy Lee (Patrick) Driscoll of Holly; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Justin Michael Driscoll; and all of his siblings.

A memorial service will be held at a later time and date.

There will be no visitation at the Collon Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Human Development Commission, Community Action Agency, 429 Montague Ave., Caro, MI 48723
